Based on a true story about a group of American servicemen who were put in a Japanese court and executed for alleged war crimes. Two bomber crews are captured by the Japanese after the 1942 raid against Tokyo. Dana Andrews plays the highest ranking officer, Captain Harvey Ross. When they are taken to court they find themselves charged with war crimes for bombing non-military installations. Imprisoned they are subsequently tortured before being be-headed. Widely regarded as an example of overt racism (in the character of General Mitsubi, played by Richard Loo) bound up with US war propaganda. Arthur C. Miller's expressionistic lighting and camerawork is often noted.
