Formula One, ?F1? racing is one of the most exciting, and expensive, sports in the world. Governed by the Fédération Internationale de l?Automobile (FIA), the stakes are high for drivers, constructors and sponsors alike and the economic effect of the sport across the globe is significant. Divided into two World Championships (for drivers and constructors), Grands Prix are usually held on purpose-built circuits, however, some races are run over closed public roads. The Grand Prix de Pau in 1901 was the first race to be given a name that is synonymous with motor racing the world over today. On 26 June 1906, an event near Le Mansin Francewith a starting field of 32 cars, raced a 65-mile (105-km) triangular course over two days. From this point on, the Grand Prix in Le Manssignalled the start of an era, and the sport celebrated its centenary in 2006.
