Description

Excerpt from The Channings
One of the most popular stories of English domestic life ever written, "The Channings" is computed to have been sold on both sides the Atlantic to the number of nearly a million copies. It was Mrs. Henry Wood's fourth book, and was first published in 1862, when "East Lynne" (1861), had already stablished fast the author's fame as a novelist. She was born at Worcester in 1814, the daughter of Thomas Price, a glove-manufacturer. Her career as a writer of fiction had begun with short stories, which appeared in "Bentley's Miscellany" and in Colburn's "New Monthly Magazine." No doubt her experience, thus gained, came to her aid when she established the "Argosy" in 1867. Without depreciating in any degree the other novels and stories in which she is the chronicler of the everyday English life of the Victorian period, her readers may fairly claim that her best work in this kind is in "The Channings." Afterwards, in the two series of "Johnny Ludlow," which first appeared anonymously in the "Argosy," she repeated with something of a new effect the same familiar art. A sequel to "The Channings," which bears the name of "Roland Yorke," was published in 1869, and had a success almost equal to that of its predecessor. Mrs. Wood died in 1887.
