Buddhism is about becoming enlightened about the true nature of the universe. This is also the objective of science. The difference between Buddhism and science is their starting points. Buddhism is based on the idea that consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe. Science, on the other hand, believes that consciousness is not real, except for being personally real. Medieval Buddhism has described the existence of a 'structure of consciousness', within which the various levels of one's personal experiences take place. Buddhism tries to help individuals find out where they are placed within this structure. The point of this work is to examine this structure in a scientific light, separate from Buddhist practices. It is up to the individual to decide whether to ascend or descend this structure, having been convinced that it exists. How can consciousness be fundamental, you may ask? Well, find something that is not a form of consciousness. Every sense-experience is a form of consciousness. Every idea is a form of consciousness. Words represent every possible sense-experience and every idea, including 'electricity', 'atom' and 'mass'; they are sounds, which are also forms of consciousness.
