Country music - a mixture of traditional American folk music, gospel and Anglo-Irish folk music - used to be called 'hillbilly' music until that term was deemed derogatory. It has become more and more important in recent times, with a string of hit singles and albums and the rise to prominence of such iconic performers as Elvis Persley and Garth Brooks.
