The guild OF han dicraft was founded in 1888 in East London. It Owed its origin to two needs - the need for the establishment Of standard in craftsmanship and the need for education in the crafts. Seeing that the maintenance of good standard in craftsmanship postulates also good standard in character and the producing craftsman, the Guild has always kept before itself three Objectives (i) a fair rate Of wages, (2) a co-operative system among its members, (3) good working conditions. The last Of these three has been realised in the pleasant and beautiful surroundings Of Chipping Campden, the Cotswold village, and the shops Of the Old eighteenth century silk mill where the members Of the Guild now conduct their work.
