On entering the hotel at Providence, no one took the least notice of me. The waiters were attending upon the people dining at a large table, and it was not until I had pitched my great coat into a chair and my hat into another, and had walked to the top Of the room and rung the bell, that I received any attention. I then inquired of the waiter who came to me, if I might get some dinner at the table he told me I could, and got me a chair, and then all the people about me were civil enough, particularly one person who was near the centre Of the table, who was very attentive to my wants. I found out afterwards that he was the master of the hotel, and I saw, from his portrait in another part of the house, that he had been a captain in the United States navy. The Andover student gave me a very pleasing account of religion at Providence. He considered the great proportion of the inhabitants to be God-fearing people. He mentioned a cus tom which prevailed there, and I suppose also in many other places, which appeared very strange at first, and that was, that although there were Christians Of almost all denominations in the town, the same bell summoned the inhabitants to their respective places of worship at the same hour.
