The people's war on the Home Front in Britain during the Second World War continues to fascinate. All aspects of everyday life were affected by the war. From food rationing and the emergence of Utility clothing, to postwar changes in education and the creation of the NHS, the Second World War had a far-reaching impact on Britain.

Formed to tell the public about the war, keep up morale and encourage people to contribute to the war effort, the Ministry of Information publicised topics such as 'Make Do and Mend', salvage and fuel economy through the production of posters, leaflets and exhibitions. Drawing on the Imperial War Museum's 'D' Series of photographs, commissioned by the Ministry of Information, this collection of images tells the story of Britain's Home Front. Many have not been seen in print since their first use in wartime publications. The author, an expert on the British Home Front, has supported each photograph with a detailed and fully researched caption.
