With an average weight of around a ton, the Shire horse is a majestic, powerful gentle giant. Bred from King Henry the VIII's Great English War Horse, the Shire horse is an icon of Great Britain. In 1900 there were around 40,000 Shires horses in London and a million in the UK. Over 6,000 were used in the capital for the brewery trade alone. The internal combustion engine replaced them over time until now the breed is considered more endangered than the Great Panda.
