Description

Science Year was the third Government-funded focus year aimed at encouraging interest in and uptake of key subjects. Science Year was so successful that it has now been extended to July 2003 under the guise of Planet Science, but the initial aims still remain: 'to improve, for ever, the way in which science is viewed, taught and studied so that young people can engage more creatively with a future that is increasingly scientific and technological'.

Planet Science have received sponsorship from The AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust to produce materials for teachers which will be given away free. The Little Book of Experiments is the first of these projects and arose from a recognition that, while there are a number of resources for teachers, problems arise due to availability of equipment, lengthy setting up procedures, or inadequate information. Also, the same experiments are studied year after year which, whilst demonstrating important curriculum concepts, can erode scientific creativity and enjoyment.

The Little Book of Experiments contains over 30 innovative experiments for pupils at Key Stage 2/3 which seek to encourage the excitement and vigour that is the basis of scientific exploration. Experiments fall into three main categories: teacher demonstrations, class activities and class investigations. The pack is supported by online resources at www.planet-science.com, and each experiment is fully linked to the National Curriculum strategy.

Devised and written by practising teachers, science centres and scientists themselves, this brand new resource provides teachers with fresh stimulus and ideas for bringing fun and interest to science in the classroom.
