The Mediterranean shore - Paul Hogarth

The Mediterranean has attracted writers, artists, tourists and travellers to its islands and shores. Lawrence Durrell has lived there for the best part of his life and celebrates the area in his novels and travel books. His writing is inseparable from its romantic landscapes, cults, mysteries and famed buildings.;Paul Hogarth knows the Mediterranean too; he has a house in the hills of Majorca. In his watercolours he evokes the settings of Durrell's novels - the Nile delta and encompassing desert of "The Alexandria Quartet", the Acropolis and Golden Horn of "The Revolt of Aphrodite", the Roman and Medieval backdrop for "The Avignon Quintet".;Five travel books and 13 novels are illustrated and introduced by a written impression of each book. The illustrations are set off by extracts so that the artist's vision and the writer's are juxtaposed. Both Durrell and Hogarth comment on the paintings and a selection of Durrell's poems is also included and these are accompanied by vignettes from the artist.;Paul Hogarth is represented in many permanent collections throughout the world. His works are based on his travels - in his own books and in collaboration with Doris Lessing, Brendan Behan, Malcolm Muggeridge, Robert Graves and Stephen Spender.
