In 10 short years, Wigan Athletic has gone from skid row, propping up the bottom of the Football League and on the verge of bankruptcy, to millionaire's row, proudly sitting alongside Chelsea and Man. U. The club can trace its roots back at least as far as the famous rugby club with which it today shares an uneasy truce and stadium. How it got there is an extraordinary tale, and but for the sheer grit and determination of a handful of people in its early history, it is probable that no football would be played in the town today.
