The Struggle Over Land in Acholi, Northern Uganda - Helixs Oroma

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, London School of Economics (Department of International Development), course: MSc International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies, language: English, abstract: Land conflict in Acholi has often been expounded in reference to the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) civil war - that is, the long period of LRA civil war and displacement that led to loss of land boundaries and alteration of socio-cultural norms and practices which weakened the institution of traditional authority in handling land-related matters. This paper argues that the dispute over land in Acholi is a result of the incongruity based on principles between the modern state and traditional Acholi land institution, which work parallel to each other hence producing confusions that trigger conflict.
