When Julia was eight, she was thrilled to be a bridesmaid for her cousin Iris. But then things began to go wrong, starting with an episode involving her cousin's baby, a pram and a secret trip round the block. Now, Julia is a child psychologist who deals with young girls said to be behaving badly. She understands which of them really are troubled, and which are just seen that way by the adults around them.
