Description

Nightmare Boy is a colourful action platformer that wears its 16 bit influences very clearly on its sleeve. You play as Billy, a boy on his way to the land of nod when he's interrupted by a monster and sucked into a dark dream world as Nightmare Boy. While the game certainly enjoys playing around with various monster tropes, though, it does it in a bright, impish sort of way that delights in blasts of colour delivered with a cathode ray tube, slightly pixel-ish art style. The action is tough, especially when you get to the boss fights, and the game doesn't do a huge amount to hold your hand. You could make a good case for Nightmare Boy being a Metroidvania game, but for all the exploration there's a strong emphasis on tight platforming and precision

combat. Nightmare Boy is, in short, a retro frightfest that will appeal to fans of the likes of Cuphead and Super Meat Boy.
