The War of the little Englishman - Eirian Jones

Many fascinating yet horrific events have taken place on some of our most rural, unspoilt upland regions in past times. One example comes from the Mynydd Bach, mid-Wales in the 1820s. A Lincolnshire born gentleman, Augustus Brackenbury, spends nearly half of his inheritance buying land from the Crown, so that he can develop a country estate there. The local inhabitants care little for his plans. In fact, the repeatedly knock down the walls of his new houses and at one stage, the mob try to roast him alive. The ten years that Brackenbury endured on the Mynydd Bach were known as The War of the Little Englishman.
