Melodrama set in the 1930s based on a play by Tennessee Williams, co-written by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Sydney Pollack. Robert Redford stars as Owen Legate, a railroad official from New Orleans who travels to a small Mississippi town to lay off workers on the railways - the town's main source of income. There he meets Alva Starr (Natalie Wood), a wild and beautiful local girl who dreams of leaving provincial life and all its petty intrigues behind her. The two fall passionately in love, but between Alva's overbearing mother Hazel (Kate Reid) and the townspeople - who are bitter about the closure of the railways - their fledgling romance is met with hostility and violence.
