John Wayne double-bill. In 'Three Faces West' (1940), in the days preceding World War Two, an Austrian refugee and his daughter flee Nazi Germany and find themselves in the dustbowl of Oregon. They are taken in by John Phillips (Wayne), an inspirational character amongst the community who finds himself falling for the refugee's daughter. The course of true love, naturally, doesn't run smoothly, and when the girl's previous lover announces his arrival, John must fight for the girl he loves. In 'Shepherd of the Hills' (1941), Wayne plays Matt Masters, an Ozark Mountains moonshiner, who nurtures a hatred for the father he has never met, who abandoned him as a boy. When a wandering stranger called Daniel Howitt (Harry Carey) arrives in the mountains, his gentle influence rubs off on the backwoods communities, but Matt starts to get suspicious as to who this stranger really is.
