Pamela Pryor is a divorced forty-something-year-old mother whose son has, at last, left home. She feels free, but also lonely and strangely restless. There have been three significant men in her life - Peter, her ex-husband, advocate of the Design for Absence; Douglas, a style guru; and Dean, a beautiful younger man, all of whom have begun to think of Pamela in romantic terms again. Pamela's mother thinks she should take up with Peter; her best friend Margie thinks she threw away the love of her life in Douglas; and her old friend Rick thinks she should kick up her heels a little and have some fun with Dean. But Pamela wants to get to know herself again and can't quite decide which of her three suitors (if any) she should take up with.
