On May 16, 2002, Phil and Susan Ershler achieved what no other couple ever had: they reached the top of Mt. Everest and became the first couple in history to scale the fabled 7 Summits, the highest mountain on each continent. What makes their achievement more remarkable is that Susan was not a mountain climber but a high-powered Fortune 500 executive. Though she has become one of only five women to complete the 7 Summits and the 12th American woman to climb Everest, she had never climbed until she met Phil aged 36. Phil, a professional mountain guide, has climbed his whole life with Crohn's disease, a chronic, debilitating illness and completed the climb after a struggle with colon cancer that was expected to end his climbing career. He was later diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer but still travels the world to lead climbing expeditions as he's done for nearly three decades.
