One Italian plumber, a whole bunch of rabbids, two very epic games! Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle When you first hear its title, the unlikely Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle sounds like a recipe for a set of party games. But... nope. Ubisoft and Nintendo made the surprising decision to make this bizarre crossover a tactical turn-based combat game not dissimilar in style to the XCOM series. The result is a game with a lot more depth but all of the humour you'd expect from a meeting of the rascally Rabbids and Mario and his pals. The Mushroom Kingdom has been rent asunder by a mysterious vortex, transporting the Rabbids into this once peaceful land. While the mischevious Rabbids might be enough to break the peace all by themselves, they actually end up teaming with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Yoshi to journey through four different worlds and restore the Mushroom Kingdom to its former glory. This isn't a thin attempt at turn-based action, either. With an arsenal of more than 250 (often hilarious) weapons, each with their own unique stats and specs as well as a host of special abilities, there's plenty of meat here for players looking for a satisfying Mario meal. Throw in local multiplayer and you've got a lot to go at, all delivered with a gleefully irreverent sense of humour. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope takes up the strange premise of Kingdom Battles and takes it to the final frontier, space. It's an XCom-style turn-based, tactical adventure that has Nintendo and Ubisoft's mascots teaming up for some quirky action. With the grand canvas of space to play across you find yourself exploring a host of planets that look like they could have been designed for Mario Galaxy. Each has a couple of main story objectives plus a ton of side quests that will have you exploring, solving puzzles and chatting with locals. The real action, though, is combat. This time, the grid system of Kingdom Battles is out and you're able to run freely around a character's movement area, making for a more dynamic experience that lets you find just the right spot of cover or angle on an enemy. Your character's natural abilities are boosted by the titular Sparks. They're basically floating pillow guys who can add special new powers to your basic moves. They might add fire to your main attack, or make you invisible for a turn or deliver an area attack. A big part of the fun of Sparks of Hope is finding interesting ways to pair the Sparks up with your character, giving you some creative options for problem solving. The dev team at Ubisoft has paired the imaginative design of the Mario games with the riotous fun of Rabbids to create a game that is very much its own weird, fun beast.
