Five episodes from the first series of the 1970s period drama. Owing to industrial action at the ITV companies when 'Upstairs, Downstairs' was being filmed in 1971, the first six episodes of the series were taped in black and white. The first episode, 'On Trial', went on to be re-filmed in colour, but the subsequent five episodes remained in black and white, and are included here. In 'The Mistress and the Maids', Lady Marjorie is having her portrait painted by a Scottish aristocrat. When the new parlourmaid is sent to his studio with a dress for Lady Marjorie, a relationship begins that could cause a major scandal in Society. In 'Board Wages', Lord and Lady Bellamy are off on their summer holidays and have taken their most senior servants with them. While they are away, the younger servants, who have been left behind on reduced pay to clean the house, decide to hold a party, but get a shock when James returns home just as it is getting into full swing. 'The Path of Duty' sees Elizabeth Bellamy on the cusp of 'coming out' in Society. Rather than toe the line and make her debut at a grand society ball as her family wishes, she causes a scandal by running away. In 'A Suitable Marriage', Elizabeth falls in love with a young, handsome German Baron. Her family are pleased with her choice... until they find out a few unsavoury facts about the Baron and change their minds. In 'A Cry for Help', Richard Bellamy endangers his political career by offering to help the under-housemaid, Mary, after finding her crying in the library.
