Velvett Fogg were one of many new bands within the underground scene, that were formed at the end of the sixties that would attempt to take pop music to a higher level of creativity. Velvett Fogg's self-titled (and only) album was released on the Pye label. Despite what some may have thought, the album stands up as a fine example of late 1960s British psychedelia. They were fronted by soul singer Ernie Handy and the guitarist Bob Hewitt. Opener 'Yellow Cave Woman' is a great slice of quasi-mystical heavy psych. The Bee Gees 'New York Mining Disaster 1941' and The Weavers anti-war song 'Come Away Melinda' are cover songs but both are quite impressive. Their exciting stage act included a light show and a go-go dancer.
