It has been a larger work than originally intended, when the scheme was to see what-had become of the families who appeared before Dugdale. The editor has been tempted to extend that idea and to carry the pedigrees further back, and in many cases to include the Visitations of Tonge, Flower and Glover.

As there are about 470 pedigrees in these volumes, it is not surprising that some mistakes may have occurred, the different authorities not always being correct, so that the Addenda should be consulted to see what has been observed.

Since the commencement of the work many more sources of information have become available, such as the further indexes of the Wills at York and Somerset House, the further printed Parish Registers, the works of the Surtees, Harleian and Thoresby Societies, and other local histories, from which some additions are also in the Addenda.
