Where do you take your series when it's gone all the way from being a free-roaming sandbox crimefest to starring the criminal president of the United States as he takes on alien invaders? Back to the beginning. Saints Row is a reboot of Volition's iconic open world shooter, taking the franchise back to its roots with a stripped back approach that's much closer to Grand Theft Auto than the sci-fi madness of Saints Row IV. This Notorious Edition is the full package, with the base game, expansion pass and a mighty stack of exclusive items offering taking you deep into the the Saints gang and the criminal world of Santo Ileso. You play as the sort-of leader (and one quarter) of the Saints, a gang out to establish themselves as the number one criminal organisation in Santo Ileso, a Las Vegas-alike city out in the desert. The game starts you off as it means for you to go on - with a ton of freedom in the character creation tool. From there, it's a question of committing a lot of crimes, driving a lot of vehicles and killing a lot (a LOT) of people. There's a ton of variety in the mission structure, but despite the deep well of content on offer it all feels tight and choreographed. Gunplay, in particular, is a high point. And, if you're an old-school fan who worries the series has gotten poe-faced, worry not. Everything from the dialogue to some of the weirder skills (try the magic power to chuck your enemies into the air and then ground-slam them) comes with a dash of the series' signature energy and eccentricity.
