Description

Four-volume documentary set about the aircraft used in the Second World War. 'The Vickers Wellington' explores the history of the the British bomber plane of which over 11,000 were produced and examines the impact it had in the war under the operation of the Bomber Command, Coastal Command and Transport Command military units. 'The Hawker Hurricane' looks at the fighter monoplane that played a key role in the Battle of Britain. Though often overshadowed by the newer Spitfire, it was the Hurricane that took on the bulk of the defensive responsibilities in the tussle for control of Britain's skies that proved so pivotal to the outcome of the war. Capable of travelling faster than 300 mph, the Hurricane is fondly remembered by aviation enthusiasts for both its technical qualities and contribution to the war. 'The Bristol Blenheim' features the aircraft often referred to as 'The Forgotten Bomber'. The programme explores the history of the Bristol Blenheim, including its initial use by the Daily Mail to transport reporters and the operations it undertook as a bomber, fighter and reconnaissance aircraft. 'The Flying Boats' looks back on Britain's use of flying boats during the war. The defence of Britain's coast was a priority in the Second World War and required the means to deal with a number of threats including U-boat attacks on shipping convoys. Flying boats such as The Catalinas and Short Sunderlands were of key importance in the battle against Hitler's Germany, taking part in over 240,000 operations and destroying 212 U-boats.
