Maggie Hamilton takes a look inside the lives of teenage girls and comes up with some startling facts. Girls have taken to technology but are engaging with it in highly damaging ways: they are being groomed by older men; they are visiting websites promoting the benefits of anorexia as a lifestyle choice; they are being bullied and are bullying via chat rooms. Marketers are developing products that promote the early sexualisation of girls padded bras and pole dancing kits for the under 10s are some of the more extreme examples. Girls are choosing role models on the basis of looks rather than achievement. Binge drinking is rife among under 15s, as is casual sex. Maggie works her way through these issues with compassion and care, all the while arguing for parents to take a more active role in ensuring their girls get to think and behave like children for a longer period of time.
