It's the end of 1944, and for the Americans to continue to pressure the Japanese, they need to capture the island of Palau. This opens up the opportunity to advance towards the Philippines, which the Americans then liberate in 1945. The same year, America conquers Iwo Jima, strategically important as the island lies just 1,000 miles south of Tokyo, and is an ideal place from which to launch aerial attacks on Japan. The subsequent bombing of Tokyo, and the dropping of the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nakasaki, effectively ends Japanese resistance, with the Japanese military signing the documents of surrender aboard the USS Missouri on 2nd September, 1945.
