Wynton Marsalis began studying the trumpet seriously at age twelve. During high school he performed in local marching bands, jazz bands, funk bands, and classical orchestras, and at age 18, he moved to New York to attend the Julliard School of Music. In 1982, he became a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and signed with Columbia Records. This release features performances of several tracks: 'March', 'Cherokee', 'Root Groove', 'The Man I Love', 'Express Crossing' and 'String Yaounde'.
