Romance, combat, crafting and... agriculture. To the uninitiated, they sound like a funny old combination, but to the fans of Rune Factory they're the perfect recipe for a cosy RPG. You're deposited via portal outside the sleepy town of Rigbarth, where a community-minded organisation known as SEED take you on as a ranger, giving you duties that basically make you a cross between a monster hunter and a scout, with a massive farm to tend to boot. The farming part is relatively easy to get started with, though getting really good at it will take decidedly longer. You could quite comfortably spend a few hours learning all the systems that will produce the perfect green pepper. Complementing the farming element of the game is adventuring into dungeons. Combat has a surprising amount of depth, and will enable you to capture monsters to provide resources for your farming endeavours or to help you in the next fight. Crafting also plays into the other activities. The sheer scope of what you can create is massive - you could probably spend all your time on cooking food alone. Or, you can get most of what you need just by following the story and completing side quests for other characters. And, of course, once you're ready for a deeper commitment to the game, you can find yourself a sweetheart to settle down and raise a family with. All in all Rune Factory 5 offers a LOT of depth, enabling you to choose from a menu of ways to spend your time, any one of which could constitute a game in its own right.
