Early film from maverick Japanese director Takashi Miike, based on the semi-autobiographical novel by lorry driver-turned-author Riichi Nakaba. Set during the 1970s in Kishiwada, a working-class neighbourhood in the industrial town of Osaka, the film follows two school friends Kotetsu (Koji Chihara) and Chuba (Kyosuke Yabe) through their first year after leaving school. With a bleak future ahead and nothing to lose, the boys settle into a life of violence and crime: beating each other up, beating up other people (in one scene, Kotetsu smashes a rival gang member in the face with a brick), and getting beaten up themselves (at another point the two are tied to a fence and pummeled with stones) - in between doing mindless, low-paid jobs and having meaningless sex. A story of rough kids trying to find their way in the world, the film combines extreme violence with sentiment and comedy.
