Toshir Mifune stars in this 1950s Japanese period crime drama directed by Akira Kurosawa. Arrogant bandit Tajmaru (Mifune) is brought to trial, charged with the murder of samurai Takehiro Kanazawa (Masayuki Mori) and the rape of his wife Masako (Machiko Ky). As the crime is recounted by four witnesses - Tajmaru, Masako, Takehiro through use of a medium (Noriko Honma) and a woodcutter (Takashi Shimura) - all of whom have their own version of the event, the intertwining realities dilute the concept of an objective, singular truth and call into question the tenuous relationship between fact and memory.
