58% of Brits will try and have a sustainable Christmas this year

 

Christmas is just around the corner and the time has nearly come for decorations to go up, gifts to be bought and festive food to be eaten.

Interestingly, many of us are adding sustainability to our festive planning too. We recently surveyed 2,000 UK adults and found that 58% plan to have a sustainable Christmas in some form. Even more encouragingly, 51% intend to have their most eco-friendly celebration yet!

There are many ways to have a more sustainable Christmas, but the British public is mainly focused on reducing the waste associated with the holidays and reconsidering travel.

57% won’t send Christmas cards

88% will keep food waste to a minimum

78% won’t travel as much

Many of us will find eco-friendly gifts under our trees this year, with 7 in 10 saying it’s important their gift-giving has a positive impact on the planet.

7 out of 10 will buy gifts made from eco-friendly materials

Almost half will buy second-hand or refurbished gifts

Nearly 75% will consider spending more than usual to buy sustainable presents

 

In addition, 39% will only buy things which help the planet such as donations to charity, buying Fairtrade and shopping second-hand.

49% are becoming more eco-friendly to save money

Christmas is a joyous time but it’s clear that a significant portion of us are mindful of the potential negative impacts of Christmas traditions too.

Half say the festive period is damaging because of the extra energy used for lights and decorations

52% blame the impact on people binning old things to make room for new, rather than recycling them.
