SEGA were best-known for their successful arcade games before venturing into home consoles in 1983 with the SG-1000. The console struggled against Nintendo’s Famicom and was only available in Japan.

The Master System was launched across Japan, North America and Europe in 1985, 1986 and 1987 respectively. The console had particular success in Europe as it sold 6.8 million consoles. Thirty years later, the Master System is still being produced and sold in Brazil!

Succeeding the Master System was the SEGA Mega Drive, which again was popular in Europe. This was due in part to Sonic the Hedgehog. SEGA wanted a mascot to compete with Nintendo’s ever-popular Italian plumber Mario. Luckily for SEGA, that idea paid off and Sonic became one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time!

SEGA didn’t enjoy the same successes with the Saturn and Dreamcast consoles as Sony’s PlayStation and PlayStation 2 began to dominate the console market. The Dreamcast is the last console SEGA released, reaching Europe in October 1999 but was discontinued less than two years later.
