Comparing AI in smartphones: Galaxy AI vs Google AI vs Apple Intelligence

AI is the next big thing when it comes to our tech, with most major smartphone brands adding it to their devices. But is there a difference between these AI software, and if so, which one is best? We’re comparing AI from tech giants such as Google, Samsung and Apple to see which brand offers the best AI smartphone features on the market right now!

In this blog:

What AI software does each brand use?

So you want to know which out of Apple, Samsung and Google has the best AI software – let’s start with which brand uses which software.

Google was the first of the three to create and incorporate AI into their mobile phones, releasing both Gemini and Google AI in late 2023. While Google AI is a built-in AI suite for Google-only phones, Gemini is a Google app and so can be downloaded on other Android devices too.

The next brand to come out with its own AI software was Samsung at the beginning of 2024. Samsung introduced their users to Galaxy AI with their latest S24 models, however they are slowly adding Galaxy AI to older models now too. As Samsung phones are Android devices, they can also support Google’s Gemini app.

The last to add AI to their smartphones was Apple. They have only just dipped their toes into the AI world, having released their first version of Apple Intelligence in September 2024. If that wasn’t late enough to the race, this first version of Apple Intelligence is also lacking most of the features Apple have advertised, leaving most Apple users waiting until early 2025 to access the full range of features.

Galaxy AI features

Photography and editing

The latest Galaxy AI features for photography and editing are designed to help users take creative control with ease.

Instant Slow Mo

Galaxy AI includes access to the Instant Slow Mo feature, a generative AI tool that lets you slow down any video, creating a smooth and natural-looking slow-motion effect. This means you can add a cinematic touch to any clip, even if it was filmed at regular speed.

Generative Edit

An exciting addition to Galaxy AI is Generative Edit, Samsung’s AI-powered image editing tool. With Generative Edit, you can quickly retouch photos, apply effects and remove unwanted objects from your images.

Creativity and everyday usability

Samsung’s AI features are not only enhancing smartphone photography. With a blend of creative options and practical features, Galaxy AI is designed to make your daily tasks easier and more enjoyable.

Circle to Search

Circle to Search is a feature that allows users to quickly access relevant information on just about anything. By simply drawing a circle around any text or image on the screen, you can instantly search for related information, providing a fast and seamless way to find answers on the spot.

AI summarisation

Another smart addition is AI Summarisation, which can provide quick summaries of content within Samsung Notes, web pages on your internet browser and even voice recordings. Whether you’re browsing a long article, reviewing meeting notes or playing back a voice memo, AI Summarisation will give you the choice of a brief overview or a detailed summary.

Chat Assist helps improve your conversational tone in messages and chats, ensuring your texts are always clear and appropriately phrased. This feature includes grammar checks and suggestions to help refine your writing, whether you’re sending a quick text or drafting a longer message.

Apple Intelligence features

Photography and editing

Apple’s new AI software, although not fully released yet, is expected to improve smartphone photography, making it easier than ever to capture, enhance and relive life’s best moments.

Clean Up in Photos

Once officially released, Apple Intelligence will include the AI feature Clean Up in Photos, which will allow users to quickly and effortlessly tidy up their images. The Clean Up in Photos tool will use Apple’s AI to identify and refine areas of the photo that could use improvement, whether that’s fixing blemishes or removing background distractions.

Memory Movie

Memory Movie is another impressive AI-powered feature that takes photo organisation to the next level. By recognising people, places and events, Apple Intelligence can automatically create personalised slideshows. The feature carefully selects the best photos that match your request, arranges them and even suggests fitting music, making it easy to relive special memories in a beautifully crafted, shareable format.

Creativity and everyday usability

Apple Intelligence aims to make new iPhone devices even easier to use, and a lot more fun too.

Genmoji

While not available to Apple users just yet, Apple Intelligence will come equipped with the Genmoji feature, which will let users create personalised emojis. Simply type in a description of the emoji you want to create and Apple Intelligence will do the rest!

Natural Language Search

Natural Language Search in Photos is another innovative feature that leverages AI to make finding photos effortless. You’ll be able to type search phrases like “sunset last summer” or “dog in the park” and Apple Intelligence will pull up the relevant images from your camera roll.

Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing in Focus

Apple will also offer Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing in Focus, a feature that lets you control interruptions more precisely. This AI-driven capability allows you to filter out distractions while allowing priority notifications to come through, enhancing productivity without missing what’s important. Paired with Priority Messages, which ensures essential messages are pushed to the top of your feed, these tools will streamline communication in both work and personal life.

Type to Siri

For those times when speaking isn’t convenient, Apple has created Type to Siri. Instead of using voice commands, you can simply type requests to Siri, making the AI experience more versatile. Meanwhile, Summaries in Mail and Messages provides a quick overview of important content, helping you scan and prioritise emails and texts.

Visual Intelligence

Apple Intelligence offers the Visual Intelligence tool, capable of recognising and processing visual information within photos. This feature identifies text, objects and even places in images, giving you context and actionable options like saving contact details from a business card photo or searching for information about an object you captured.

Language, speech and texts

The latest AI features in Apple’s lineup are designed to improve how you interact with your device, making your messages, notes and calls more productive and accessible.

Writing Tools

One of the most useful AI features Apple Intelligence will include is Writing Tools, which leverages Apple’s advanced AI to help refine your writing. This tool will offer real-time suggestions to improve grammar, style and tone, ensuring your messages come across exactly how you intend.

Voice Recordings

Voice Recordings in Notes is another AI-powered feature that enhances convenience and productivity. This feature allows you to easily record voice memos directly in the Notes app, making it perfect for on-the-go brainstorming, to-do lists or quick thoughts. The AI in this feature transcribes your recordings into text, making it simple to reference and edit later.

Phone Call Recording and Transcription

Phone Call Recording and Transcription makes it easier to capture and reference important conversations. With the help of AI, your phone calls can be recorded and automatically transcribed, allowing you to focus on the conversation without worrying about taking notes. This feature is perfect for business professionals, students, or anyone who needs to keep a record of critical discussions.

Google AI features

Photography and editing

Google has integrated cutting-edge AI features into its smartphones, making them stand out as some of the best AI smartphones for photography and editing.

Add Me

Google AI uses the Add Me feature to seamlessly add people into photos. Simply take two separate photos – one with the original group and another with a different set of people (or of the person taking the photo) – and the AI cleverly merges the images to create a cohesive group picture.

Magic Editor

Another impressive tool is Magic Editor, powered by generative AI. This feature allows you to make extensive edits to your photos, such as changing the time of day, resizing subjects or adding effects, all with just a few taps.

Auto Frame

For those who want to refine the composition of their photos, Auto Frame is a game-changer. This AI-driven tool helps reframe your image by repositioning the subject and adjusting the scene to create a more balanced, visually appealing composition. It’s especially helpful when you want to focus attention on the main subject without manually cropping or repositioning everything yourself.

Best Take

Best Take is a feature that uses Google AI to generate different facial expressions within a single picture. If someone’s eyes are closed or they’re not smiling just right, Best Take lets you select the best version of their face from multiple shots, helping you get the perfect shot every time.

Video Boost

When it comes to video editing, Video Boost offers a simple way to enhance your recordings. Using AI to adjust colour levels, this feature improves the overall visual quality of your videos, making them more vibrant and engaging.

Magic Audio Eraser

Magic Audio Eraser is a must-have for anyone who records videos in noisy environments. With a single tap, the onboard AI scans the video for distracting sounds – whether it’s background chatter, wind, or traffic – and reduces their impact on the recording, making your audio clearer and more professional.

Creativity and everyday usability

Google’s AI features for creativity and everyday usability continue to set the bar for smart technology.

Screenshot App

Google’s Pixel Screenshot App is a simple yet powerful tool that makes managing and recalling information from screenshots incredibly easy. Simply ask Pixel Screenshots for information relating to a specific screenshot, and it will quickly locate it for you.

Call Notes

The new Call Notes feature can create a private summary of your conversation after a phone call. It automatically generates a brief overview of what was discussed, allowing you to easily review key details without needing to take manual notes during the call.

AI wallpapers

Another exciting feature is AI Wallpapers, which uses generative AI to create custom wallpapers from a simple text prompt. This tool gives you endless creative options to personalise your device with unique artwork, all thanks to AI’s creative capabilities.

Circle to Search

With Circle to Search, you can now quickly identify objects or text within your photos and immediately get relevant information. This feature leverages AI to make searches faster and more accurate, improving the overall user experience when interacting with your device.

Pixel Studio

Google’s Pixel Studio is an innovative AI tool that allows users to create new artwork. This feature enables you to experiment creatively and generate new content directly from your device, turning your ideas into reality with the power of AI.

Gemini Live is a premium subscription service, offering a conversational AI experience similar to ChatGPT. Available exclusively to Gemini Advanced subscribers, this service brings advanced AI into everyday communication, offering a new level of ease and personalisation.

Language, speech and text

Google’s integration of AI in language, speech, and text features further enhances the Pixel smartphones, making them some of the best AI smartphones for communication and productivity.

Recorder app

Thanks to AI integration, the recorder app can now not only transcribe the conversations it records in real-time, but also summarise them into handy bullet points. This feature is a game-changer for anyone who needs to capture important meetings, lectures or interviews.

Call Screening

Another useful tool is Call Screening, which automatically responds to calls when you’re away from your phone. This feature uses AI to ask the caller a series of questions, such as who they are and why they’re calling, and provides you with a text summary of the conversation. This is especially helpful for avoiding spam or unknown callers, as it lets you screen calls without even picking up the phone.

Clear Calling

For a clearer, more professional phone experience, Clear Calling is an AI-driven feature that filters out distracting background noise during calls. Whether you’re in a crowded café or a noisy street, this feature uses AI to focus on your voice and reduce any unwanted sounds, ensuring your conversations are always crisp and clear.

Which AI software is the best?

That depends on what you’re looking for. While each of these AI suites are great tools, some are better than others at different things. Google AI has the most features, while Samsung’s Galaxy AI has the least – however, Apple hasn’t actually released the majority of their Apple Intelligence features yet so that’s also worth noting. Ultimately, the choice is down to you and your preferences.
