7th Sept Recommends

Magpie Recommends â€" Die Antwoord, Warpaint, Passenger and more!

With so much music coming out every week, finding the best new albums is difficult. Luckily, we're here to help!

Every week, we recommend 5 upcoming albums to wrap your ears around. Here are this week's picks…

Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid "" Die Antwoord

Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid is the 4th full length from South African rap-ravers Die Antwoord, although any fears that time has mellowed them out should be instantly allayed by the album's tracklist; songs like Gucci Coochie, Wings on My Penis and Fat Faded F*** Face suggest it'll be as vulgar and unique as ever.

The two tracks released so far are classic Die Antwoord. We Have Candy kicks off sounding like a combination of rave and The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, with a cutesy sounding character encouraging listeners to join them on the dark side (where they have candy), before the track breaks down into a hard-hitting grime-esque section.

Banana Brain is a little more straightforward, although "˜straightforward' in Die Antwoord terms is still unlike anything else; the track combines high pitched vocals with a 90s house-style melody to create something that sounds like a nightmarish version of rap-infused happy hardcore.

Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid could well be the weirdest yet catchiest record of the year, and we'd highly recommend checking it out.

Awake But Always Dreaming "" Hannah Peel

Hannah Peel is a seriously prolific musician, balancing her band The Magnetic North with numerous solo projects (including the Rebox series, a set of EPs composed using old music boxes).

So it's quite surprising that Awake But Always Dreaming is only her second solo release. It's been five years since The Broken Wave, although the wait should be well worth it if electropop lead single All That Matters is anything to go by.

Despite All That Matters upbeat sound, Awake But Always Dreaming has a sombre theme: memory, and the loss of it through dementia. The songs on the record are inspired by Peel's grandmother's experiences with the disease, as revealed in this interview with The Quietus, with the tracks exploring youth and old age through different styles and tempos.

Awake But Always Dreaming is a powerful record that is bound to be a hit with critics and listeners alike.

Heads Up "" Warpaint

After two years spent working on various solo projects, Warpaint  return with their 3rd album Heads Up.

Heads Up sees Warpaint continue down the experimental road started on their self-titled record, with psychedelic rock, post punk and even prog elements added to their signature indie rock sound. Don't confuse that for inaccessibility though; the ironically titled New Song demonstrates why Warpaint are widely regarded as one of the best indie bands of the moment.

Discussing Heads Up, Jenny Lee Lindberg says: "Everybody was allowed to have their space, time and creative freedom with songs and figure out, "˜I wonder what the best notes would be? I wonder what the best part would be to play?'"

"I feel so proud of it, and like it's an evolution of our band. It sounds like a mature version of Warpaint.

Young As The Morning, Old as the Sea "" Passenger

Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea is Passenger's 8th studio album in a remarkable career that has seen him top charts across the globe and even earn a place in YouTube's Billion Views Club.

Somebody's Love, the first single released from Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea, is a laidback ballad with subtle hints of his global megasmash Let Her Go. We wouldn't be surprised if it eventually becomes an equally huge hit, and he certainly deserves it considering he sat in a burning boat for the video!

The title track is a quieter folk track that details Passenger's yearning to experience pretty much everything in the world and is bound to become a staple of "˜chillout acoustic' playlists everywhere.

All in all, Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea is another collection of beautiful modern folk from one of the UK's best singer-songwriters.

Broken Lines "" Giraffe Tongue Orchestra

If you haven't heard of Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, you'll have undoubtedly heard of its members: Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brent Hinds of Mastodon, William DuVall of Alice in Chains, Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta and Pete Griffin of Dethklok.

With that much talent, it's no surprise that the two tracks previewed so far "" Blood Moon and Crucifixion "" are two of the best metal songs of the year. The former boasts a stomping verse and a huge chorus, while the latter is a blistering punk-metal hybrid with a twisting DEP-esque verse.

Taking a more straightforward approach than their main projects, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra should appeal to fans of metal and hard rock alike.
