What we learnt from WWDC 2018

Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference has taken place and plenty has been revealed about the changes we can expect in our next iOS update. If you were waiting on which new iPhone would be revealed, you'll be disappointed! But, it might help to give an indication of what is to come.

iOS 12

It might not be the most glamorous update but as we use iOS every day, it's important that the bugs found with iOS 11 are straightened out.

Siri

Siri was revolutionary when first introduced but with the rise of Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, Siri has fallen behind. With iOS 12, Siri is set to become much more useful in our daily lives. She will make suggestions on what notifications you should turn off like an incessant group chat that you barely keep up with.

Siri Shortcuts will come into play, too. There will be command prompts for specific apps as well as making suggestions based on the apps you used most regularly.

Screen time

In an effort to curb the overuse of devices amongst children (but adults are guilty of it too), new features will be available to try to restrict the amount of time spent on your iPhone or iPad. Parental controls will allow you to monitor the time your child spends on their phone and set different allowances.

For yourself, you can set specific time boundaries depending on the apps you use the most. You'll receive time-bound notifications to let you know when your allotted time for the most addictive apps have almost been used up.

A new Do Not Disturb feature will be available. It allows you to set the feature at night to stop you being aggravated by notifications when you try to sleep. When you wake up, you can tap on the screen to see the things you've missed.

Memoji

When the iPhone X was revealed last year, the Animoji feature got plenty of people talking. With the iOS 12 update, more Animojis will be available as well as the new Memoji feature. You can create an emoji of yourself "" notably similar to the AR Emoji feature we've seen on the Samsung S9 and S9+.

FaceTime

The video calling feature FaceTime is also getting a huge update. Soon, you'll be able to hold a group FaceTime call with up to 32 parties. You might not be able to get a word in edgeways on a call that big, but it will soon be possible.

macOS Mojave

Also announced at WWDC was macOS Mojave. This update sees a Dark Mode being introduced (like the night mode option on Twitter) which looks beautiful. There is also a focus on privacy with a new Safari feature being introduced. It will block tracking sites and will ask you to allow it to appear when you're browsing the web.

watchOS 5

The watchOS5 update is going to help make your Apple Watch way more social. A Walkie-Talkie feature has been announced as well as Competition. Challenge your friends and you'll receive coaching notifications to help you beat them!

Podcasts are to become available on your watch so you can listen to your favourites on the go. Yoga and Hiking dedicated work outs are coming to watchOS 5 as is auto-work out detection.

All of these updates are expected to roll out for Apple users around September or October this year.
