The iPhone 12 features improved water resistance, with a splash, water and dust resistance rating of IP68. Apple suggests that you can submerge your iPhone 12 under 6 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.

With the release of the iPhone 12, Apple decided to change up their storage options. You can now buy the iPhone 12 with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB of storage. While you now have a bigger range of storage options, the extra storage will cost more.

The iPhone 12 offers an A14 Bionic chip with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine to help with processing. The iPhone 12 is also compatible with iOS 16.

Design

Design-wise, the iPhone 12 isn’t too far off its predecessor. It’s made with the same aluminium frame, however, the edges have been altered. Instead of the convex edging on the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 sports new flat edging.

Apple’s Ceramic Shield glass has been upgraded for the iPhone 12, making the drop performance up to four times better than previous.

Both models are available in White, Black, Green, (PRODUCT)RED, and Purple, but there are some new colours on the block too. While the iPhone 11 had an exclusive Yellow, the iPhone 12 is available in Blue.

The ‌iPhone 12‌ is also 0.9mm thinner and 32 grams lighter than the ‌iPhone‌ 11, so your back pocket should feel slightly lighter.

Display

The iPhone 12 display comes in at 6.1-inches, which is the standard iPhone screen size. Compared to the iPhone 11 LCD Liquid Retina HD display, the iPhone 12 series OLED Super Retina XDR display offers almost twice the peak brightness. It also has higher true-blacks and contrasts, richer colours thanks to HDR and systemwide colour management for an improved colour accuracy.

Camera

While both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 have similar cameras, there are a few differences between the two. The iPhone 12 camera hosts a dual 12MP camera system with both Ultra Wide and Wide lenses.

You’ll find the iPhone 12 charging port at the bottom of the device in the form of a Lightning port. You’ll have to purchase an iPhone 12 charger plug though, as Apple no longer provides charging adapters with their newer iPhone models.

At first glance, the iPhone 12 Pro features aren’t all that different from the iPhone 12 Pro Max. They both share the same surgical-grade stainless steel design, Super Retina XDR display, 5G connectivity, A14 Bionic chip, triple camera lens, storage options and colour options.

Both models were made available in 2020 and featured a staggered release. The iPhone 12 Pro was released in October and priced at £999, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max was released in November for £1099. Apple has since discontinued the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and even the iPhone 12 Mini models.

But what differences do the Pro models have? Keep reading to find out the key differences:

Design

The iPhone 12 Pro models have an identical design, with the only differentiating factor being their sizes. The iPhone 12 Pro screen size is much smaller than the iPhone 12 Pro Max screen size.

Unlike the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, the Pro models have a surgical-grade stainless steel design. It has the Ceramic Shield at the front, a polished stainless-steel frame on the sides, and tough Gorilla Glass on the back.

If you’re in the market for a larger display, then the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a great option. The only downside to a larger device is that it’s heavier and less likely to fit in your pocket or a single hand.

Both Pro models come in the same colour options; Graphite, Gold, Silver and Pacific Blue. Due to the advanced cameras, the iPhone 12 Pro models don’t sit flat. In fact, the camera modules on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are even bigger than the ones on the iPhone 11 series.

Display

You will notice the difference in display sizes straight away, with the iPhone 12 Pro screen size measuring 6.1 inches while the iPhone 12 Pro Max screen sits at 6.7 inches. The iPhone 12 Pro screen resolution is also smaller, with a 2532 x 1170 resolution, whereas the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a resolution of 2778 x 1284.

As the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the larger of the two handsets, it will be able to display more content all at once and UI elements will appear further apart on the display. Apart from that, the two displays are almost identical. Both displays have a maximum brightness of 800 nits and a peak brightness of 1200 nits.

Battery

When it comes to battery life, the iPhone 12 Pro Max beats the iPhone 12 Pro by a few hours of charge.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a 2,815 mAh cell compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max model’s 3,687 mAh battery. Depending on usage, you’ll get 3 more hours of video playback use on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Unfortunately, you won’t get an iPhone 12 Pro Max charger or iPhone 12 Pro charger. This is due to Apple’s decision to no longer provide iPhone 11 and newer models with an adapter. While you still get a compatible cable with either model, the adapter is no longer provided.

If you’re looking to use the MagSafe or QI wireless charging features that both Pro models include, you will also need to buy the accessories separately.

Camera

Both iPhone 12 Pro models have nearly the same camera systems, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera is the better of the two and is one of the best smartphone camera systems on the market.

The iPhone 12 Pro camera offers an optical zoom range of 4x, which is considerably good, but not as impressive as the 5x optical zoom range of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Both the Pro models have 12MP wide, ultra wide and telephoto lenses and a TrueDepth front-facing camera.

The wide and ultra wide lenses have the same ƒ/1.6 aperture and ƒ/2.4 aperture, however, the iPhone 12 Pro Max telephoto lens has an upgraded ƒ/2.2 aperture. The iPhone 12 Pro has an optical zoom in of 2x and a digital zoom of up to 10x, while the Pro Max has a 2.5x optical zoom in and a digital zoom of up to 12x.

Both the iPhone 12 Pro camera specs and iPhone 12 Pro Max camera specs show shared features such as Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3 for photos, Portrait mode and Portrait lighting.

You can also take Night mode portraits and save images as Apple ProRAW files, which is something you couldn’t do on the previous iPhone 11 Pro models.

All models within the 12 range feature the A14 Bionic chip and the same amount of GPU and CPU cores, meaning there isn’t one device that’s faster than the other.

Both Pro models are very similar in terms of performance, sharing the same features such as 5G and iOS 16. The two devices even come in the exact same colours and storage sizes.

If you’re looking to take advantage of the 5G connectivity, you’ll have to find a network provider and plan that allows 5G.
