iPhone 16 security features: how Apple are enhancing user privacy
Your phone is filled with all your personal information and data, from photos of your pets to your online banking passwords. To stop this information from falling into the wrong hands, it’s essential for your device to provide solid user privacy features.
Apple have long been renowned for their high levels of security and encryption, and each new iPhone release introduces new security features to keep their devices fortified against the latest security threats. Here’s what we could expect from the new release on September 9th, according to iPhone 16 leaks and rumours!
In this blog:
Apple Intelligence and privacy
AI is becoming a standard part of all new tech devices on the market, already seen in Google Gemini and Galaxy AI released this year. Apple seem to be following suit with their own Apple Intelligence, which is rumoured to be coming to all newer devices as part of iOS 18, and is expected to introduce generative AI features and an improved version of Siri.
Apple appears to be taking a privacy-first approach to their AI platform by ensuring that as little of your personal information is shared as possible. Rumours suggest that Apple is developing their own model to power new AI features for the iPhone 16, avoiding the need for your data to be shared across servers and keeping your information private on your device (called on-device AI processing).
This is a big step for a company dabbling in AI tool development at a time when there are mass concerns about how artificial intelligence uses our data. AI collects huge amounts of information to train itself, and there’s so far very little regulation on where it can collect this data from and where else it can be shared. It’s likely that this will be more strictly regulated in the future, but for now, user privacy comes down to the tech giants’ choice to responsibly handle our data, and Apple appears to be leading the way on this.
Lock and hide apps
With the currently available Apple iOS, once someone has physical access to your unlocked phone, they can see everything that’s on it. Apple have confirmed that iOS 18 will allow users to lock apps behind Face or Touch ID, similar to the hidden photos folder on the camera roll. This could be used to add an extra layer of security to banking or other apps with sensitive data.
As an extra measure, Apple are introducing the ability to create locked and hidden app folders that also require Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open.
Passwords app
Existing iPhone models already come with the Passwords tab in the Settings menu which saves all your passwords (when you choose to) to your iCloud Keychain. This provides you with a long list of passwords saved to your Apple ID… which can be overwhelming to keep on top of.
The iPhone 16’s iOS 18 is supposedly freshening up this feature with the new Passwords app, which is ‘backed by secure end-to-end encryption and seamless syncing’, according to Apple. The app could help you organise your passwords more easily and efficiently with new filtering tools. If true, you’ll even be able to access your passwords on Windows devices via the iCloud for Windows app, so you’ll never forget a password again.
