Celebrate International Cat Day with the Best Cats from Movies and TV

To celebrate International Cat Day, here are some of our favourite on-screen felines. Share your favourite with us in the comments!

simba

Simba (The Lion King)

As much as we love them, most cats are pretty lazy. They sit around licking themselves, sleeping and eating…then saunter off around the neighbourhood to do the same thing elsewhere.

Not Simba, though. He's barely a kitten when he sees his poor Dad trampled to death by a stampede, then spends his teenage years planning for vengeance (admittedly with the help of a very cheerful meerkat and warthog) like a feline Liam Neeson.

Oh, and he's got a great singing voice for a lion too.

mr bigglesworth

Mr Bigglesworth (Austin Powers)

"When I get angry, Mr Bigglesworth gets upset. And when Mr Bigglesworth gets upset…PEOPLE DIE!"

Mr Bigglesworth may look cute, but he's actually pure evil. He accompanies Dr Evil through most of his evil schemes, and even begins to look a bit like his owner when he loses his hair after cryogenic freezing.

In real life, though, he was a big softie. The cat who played Mr Bigglesworth (the fantastically named Ted Nude-Gent) often held up filming because he kept falling asleep in Mike Myers' lap.

Salem Saberhagen (Sabrina The Teenage Witch)

Imagine if your cat could talk. Now imagine he could talk, but he had been possessed by the personality of a wise-cracking snarky cynic. That's pretty much Salem the cat from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a poor chap condemned to live as a cat for the rest of his days.

Although given that cats don't actually do much, it doesn't actually sound like that much of a punishment.

jones

Jones (Alien)

You can count the amount of humans who have survived an encounter with the infamous Xenomorph on one hand. Cats, however, have a 100% survival rate "" and it's all thanks to this little cutie.

Jones is the Nostromo's ship cat and while they're all off getting killed, he's swanning about the ship and occasionally jumping out at them for a laugh (presumably).

Garfield

Garfield (Garfield and Friends)

He's fat, lazy, regularly torments his owner and his owner's dog and has a near insatiable desire for lasagne. What's not to love?

tom

Tom (Tom and Jerry)

Poor Tom. All he wants to do is have a Jerry sandwich, yet he's constantly subjected to horrendous levels of pain and suffering. We're surprised the RSPCA never paid his owner a visit, to be honest.

Puss-in-Boots (Shrek)

Voiced by Antonio Banderas, this sword-wielding ball of fur in knee high boots is possibly the only cat who could steal your girlfriend.

Stimpy (Ren and Stimpy)

Alright, so he looks nothing like a cat. But it's impossible not to love the dopey little guy, even when he's engaging in extremely weird antics with his short-tempered Chihuahua pal Ren. And trust us, they got up to some really, really weird stuff…
