Unveiling the iPhone 16: rumoured design, colours and specifications
Apple is gearing up to unveil the newest iPhone range for 2024, but what do we actually know about this year’s iPhone 16 models? Let’s dive into all the rumoured iPhone 16 specs, including new colours, design changes and much more!
In this blog:
- Larger display sizes for the Pro models
- Vertical stacked cameras and new Capture button
- Action button for all series models
- Improved camera zoom for Pro models
- A18 chip for all 16 series
- New colour options
Larger display sizes for the Pro models
For those who wish the iPhone Pro models were a bit bigger, your dreams may indeed come true.
iPhone 16 Pro rumours suggest that both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will increase in size when compared to the previous iPhone 15 models. If the rumours are true, the iPhone 16 Pro will have a screen size of 6.3 inches and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a screen size of 6.9 inches.
According to recent iPhone leaks, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models will be sticking with the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes.
Vertical stacked cameras and new Capture button
Images leaked by Sonny Dickson posted on X showcases a substantial change to the iPhone 16 design. If the images leaked are accurate, we could see a revert back to the vertical stacked camera we saw on the iPhone 12 models and the addition of a new Capture button specifically for taking photos.
The new camera orientation will presumably allow the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models to capture Spatial Video for the Vision Pro headset.
According to rumours, the Capture button will work just like the shutter button and will be able to detect multiple levels of pressure for focusing and then capturing an image. This new button will be located at the bottom of the right side of the 16 models so it’s easy to use while capturing photos in landscape orientation
Improved camera zoom for Pro models
Want to know what the iPhone 16 Pro camera has in store for us? iPhone 16 rumours suggest that both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max could have 5x telephoto lenses (this was something that Apple added to the iPhone 15 Pro Max model only).
The iPhone 16 Pro could also see an improved 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens for even better images in lower light conditions. iPhone 16 leaks from X user RGcloudS indicate that Apple plans to add an eight-part hybrid lens with two glass elements and six plastic elements and improved telephoto and ultra wide lenses – so there’ll most likely still be some clear differences between iPhone 16 camera specs when it comes to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Action button for all series models
Last year, we saw the introduction of the Action button to replace the mute switch – but only on the Pro models. This year, we expect Apple to add this feature to all the iPhone 16 series, including the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. It’s also said that Apple intends to move the volume buttons from the right-hand side of the iPhone to the left-hand side, below the Action button.
New colour options
There has been some stirring online regarding the potential iPhone 16 colours, with a post from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicting a new rose option making its way into the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in place of last year’s blue colour.
One rumour suggested that Apple will release seven colour options for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models, including blue, pink, yellow, green, black, white and purple. This rumour has received mixed views, with some claiming that Apple will only offer five colour options for the iPhone 16 and iPhone Plus models (which is the usual amount of colour options, we should add), switching out the yellow option for white.
In terms of the iPhone 16 design, it’s said that the iPhone 16 models will all adopt the same colour-infused glass back from the previous iPhone 15 models.
A18 chip for all series
For the past two iPhone launches, Apple has divided their Pro models from the flagship and Plus models by giving their Pro models a newer chip. If current iPhone 16 leaks are true, then the iPhone 16 will break from this pattern.
According to a MacRumors report featuring statements from Jeff Pu, an executive analyst for Haitong International Securities, the iPhone 16 series will all receive the A18 chipset. However, Apple still intends to differentiate the Pro models and their chipset by giving the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max an upgraded A18 Bionic Pro chip while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus get the regular A18 chip.
It’s said that the A18 Bionic Pro chip could feature an upgraded Neural Engine with more cores, allowing for new and improved AI features.
