God of War Ragnarök

Released in November 2022, this sequel to the 2018 critically acclaimed God of War is one of the best PS4 games for those looking for a hack-and-slash, action-adventure game.

Sticking with the same characters as the first instalment of the game, God of War Ragnarök delves deeper into Norse mythology and explores the characters' past choices.

The game focuses on Kratos, a family man with a history of rage-fuelled actions now trying to balance his negative past while fathering his adolescent son, Atreus.

Gamers play as Kratos as he travels through Scandinavia slaying mythical monsters, and dedicated God of War gamers will be excited to hear that you can now play as Atreus too.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is one of the best open world games PS4 have to offer, released in February 2022, it's perfect for those who are fans of the Dark Souls series.

This RPG open world game is a spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series filled with open-ended levels within an open world environment.

You play as an adventurer named Tarnished who's on a quest to defeat four demigods and reconstruct a powerful artefact called, you guessed it, the Elden Ring.

On your quest you'll have to slay monsters, plunder dungeons and face-off with bosses who can be extremely hard to fight – so if you're put off by hard games, this might not be the best choice for you.

If you're looking for an open world RPG to spend hours mastering, Elden Ring is the PS4 game for you!

Gran Turismo 7

Our list of top PS4 games for 2023 wouldn't be complete without one of the best racing games PS4 has to offer… Gran Turismo 7!

Released in March 2022 but with updates dating to as recent as May 2023, Gran Turismo 7 is the eighth mainline instalment in the Gran Turismo series.

Players get to race each other online as well as compete in offline races, with options to chat to characters in the café and learn the history behind the different vehicles on the game.

Gran Turismo 7 offers detailed interior and exterior views of the cars and is one of the most accessible racing games on the market, giving players the option to compete against similarly skilled racers.

Resident Evil 4

If you're more interested in horror games, the Resident Evil 4 remake released in March 2023 will be right up your street!

What makes the Resident Evil 4 remake one of the best PS4 games of 2023 is Capcom's impressive upgrades whilst still keeping it similar enough to the original to offer a nostalgic feel to fans of the Resident Evil franchise.

While it's technically not a new game, Capcom has updated the old 2005 graphics for a cleaner look, along with adding auto-save, extra side missions and even some new monsters to fight.

Now fans can enjoy the classic RE4 plot, just with better graphics and gameplay!

Bloodborne

Did someone ask for the top PS4 games in the action genre? Even eight years after its initial release, Bloodborne is one of the best PS4 games if you're looking for a solid action game.

Released in March 2015, Bloodborne is still a massive hit in 2023, offering Dark Souls fans another chance to master challenging combat in this action RPG adventure.

As a Hunter, you'll have to make your way through Yharnam, a cursed city in which locals have begun to turn into mindless beasts. You'll find hidden traps, unforgiving monsters and terrifying bosses around every corner, so it's definitely on for the faint-hearted!

Horizon Forbidden West

Released in February 2022, Horizon Forbidden West is following in the footsteps of its predecessor Horizon Zero Dawn, as one of the top PS4 games of 2023.

This open world game has fantastic combat and offers gamers the chance to explore its immersive world and the characters within it.

You'll spend most of your time travelling through different biomes, ranging from dense rainforests to sweeping deserts, taking down evil robots on your travels.

If you want to see and battle robot dinosaurs in a post-apocalyptic open world game, this is the one for you!

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

For those that may be looking for something suitable for the kids to play this year, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a great option, although not technically new.

Released in November 2020, Miles Morales serves as a follow-up to Marvel's Spider-Man, sending you on a journey through New York to protect the city while Peter Parker is away.

You'll notice that Miles has different powers to that of the original Spider-Man, giving you the chance to just Venom attacks and turn invisible.

The most notable part of the game is its focus on Black and Hispanic culture, making Spider-Man: Miles Morales one of the best PS4 games for educating children while still being packed with fun-filled action!

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 has made it onto our list of best PS4 games to buy in 2023 – that is if you haven't bought it already! This game has been around since 2018, so it's by no means new, but it is a fan favourite even in 2023.

Although it's the third instalment in the Red Dead series, it's actually a prequel, so gamers who are new to the Red Dead series can play Red Dead Redemption 2 without having to buy the first one!

Playing as outlaw Arthur Morgan, you'll have to ride your horse across American deserts to escape from federal agents and bounty hunters.

This western-themed game can be played from a first-person or third-person perspective and follows outlaw Arthur Morgan as he completes missions.
