iPhone 16 performance: a deep dive into the new chip

The iPhone 16 may not be out yet but the rumours are already flying, and one in particular has caught our attention! Leaks suggest a brand new A18 chipset for the entire iPhone 16 series – but what exactly makes this chip so special? From processing abilities to overall performance, here’s everything we know about Apple’s new mystery A-series chip!

In this blog:

What is an A-series chip?

The A-series chips in iPhone devices are processors developed by Apple. These chips are central to the performance of your iPhone and handle tasks like running apps, processing graphics and managing battery efficiency.

Each new generation of the A-series chip typically brings improvements in speed, power efficiency and overall performance, enhancing the user experience with smoother multitasking, faster load times and better handling of complex tasks like gaming and photo editing.

What chipset does the iPhone 15 use?

Since the iPhone 14, Apple has given the Pro models a better chip than their standard models, and the 2023 iPhone 15 series was no exception. The iPhone 15 range features the A16 Bionic chip in the standard models, while the iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with the more advanced A17 Pro chip.

The A16 Bionic offers improvements in performance and efficiency, while the A17 Pro provides even greater speed, power efficiency, and enhanced capabilities for demanding tasks such as gaming and augmented reality applications.

iPhone 16 chipset rumours

For the first time since the iPhone 13, Apple might be using the same A-series chips for the entire iPhone 16 lineup – well, kind of.

This year, all four iPhone 16 models are expected to sport A18-branded chips. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are likely to adopt the A17 Pro design that was used in the iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max, however, could feature an A18 Pro chip with an upgraded Neural Engine for better AI and machine learning performance.

According to further rumours, the standard iPhone 16 models could also see a RAM boost to 8GB, up from 6GB in the iPhone 15 models. This means all four iPhone 16 models might come with 8GB of RAM, which Apple suggests is the minimum for running large language models (the algorithms behind AI) directly on the device instead of relying on the cloud.
