Is a small fortune sitting on your bookshelf?

Like most people, you probably have a few books lying around your house gathering dust. But did you know there's a good chance that there's money hidden in your bookshelf?

Whether it's a few pounds or hundreds, you could have a fair bit of money sitting on your bookshelf. Let's take a closer look and see if any treasures are hiding among the dust bunnies – you may just be sitting on a goldmine!

How to tell if your book is worth money

If you're an avid reader, chances are you have a few books on your shelf that you've been meaning to sell. But how do you know if your book is rare or worth money?

Well, all books are worth money, but there are a few things you can look for to help determine the value of your book:

Condition

Secondly, look at the book's condition – is it in good shape or damaged? A book in pristine condition will be worth more than one that's falling apart or damaged. Hardbacks are also worth more than paperbacks as the durability and quality are slightly better.

Author and title

Finally, research the author and title of the book. How many printings were made? Is the author well-known and popular? If your book was written by a famous author or was one of very few printings, then your book will be worth more than a standard second-hand book!

If you're not sure whether your book is rare or not, there's only one way to find out – sell it and see!

Publication date

First, check the publication date. If it's a first edition or early printing, that will likely increase the value. There are a few ways to check if your book is a first edition:

The numbers

A number line is usually present on the copyright page, such as 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. If a 1 is present (in any sequence), it's usually a sign that the book is a first edition.

The dates

If the date on a copyright page matches the date on the title page, your copy is likely a first edition.

The edition identifier

Some publishers (but not all) will print the words' First Edition', 'First Printing', or 'First Impression' on their copyright page.
