Everything you need to know about the iPhone 5se

Rumours of a smaller iPhone have been floating around since Apple unveiled the ginormous iPhone 6 back in 2014. Nothing has ever materialised, though – until now.

Yep, Apple are releasing a small iPhone and it's called the iPhone 5se. Here's everything you need to know!

What is the iPhone 5se?

It's essentially a combination of the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6.

Although no pictures have been released yet, reports suggest that the 5se has a 4 inch screen and looks like a 5s with a few tweaks such as a curved screen, a metal build and a Touch ID screen.

Rumours suggest it will be built from metal and come in four colours: Silver, Space Gray, Gold and Rose Gold. Hot Pink was also rumoured, although this apparently isn't happening.

The design of the phone is a fairly obvious reaction to iPhone users who complained about the super-sized iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, although the specs and features (which we'll get onto next) suggest the 5se is aimed at smaller budgets too.

What features will the iPhone 5se have?

Despite the name, the iPhone 5se will inherit most of its features and specs from the iPhone 6 and 6S.

There's a little bit of a debate about which phone the 5se will borrow its specs from, however. Early rumours suggested it would have the same specs as the iPhone 6, with an A8 chip, NFC and support for Apple Pay.

However, respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and a few others suggest it will actually have the A9 chip from the iPhone 6S and 2GB of RAM. Given that the iPhone 6 is 2 years old this year, it makes sense that Apple would go for the better – but still outdated – specs.

Most of the analysts agree that the 5se will have the same 8 megapixel camera and 1.2mp front camera as the iPhone 6 though, as well as 16GB and 32GB storage options.

When is the iPhone 5se coming out?

While nothing official has been announced yet, the iPhone 5se launch date is strongly rumoured to be Tuesday 15th March. It will be unveiled at a special Apple event, along with the Apple Watch 2 and the iPad Air 3 (apparently!).

As with most iPhones, the 5se should hit shelves a few weeks later.

It will be unveiled on 15th March, according to reports. It should be released a couple of weeks after. New update to the Apple Watch.

Why is it called the iPhone 5se?

We really don't know. Given the iPhone 5s is 3 years old this year, surely naming it after the younger iPhone 6 would make it more appealing?

Either way, the "˜se' stands for either "˜special edition' or "˜enhanced' and, despite the 5 branding, this is more or less a small iPhone 6.
