In this blog:
Apple’s previous launch history
It’s widely known that Apple likes to stick to a September launch date, with their Keynote event usually taking place on the first or second Tuesday of the month. Once the major event has taken place, Apple tends to schedule the commercial release date around 10-11 days later, mostly landing on a Friday.
Looking at previous iPhone announcements, Apple tends to favour the second Tuesday of September the most, but will Apple keep to this trend for the iPhone 15 release date?
Occasionally, Apple has announced new releases on Wednesdays, as it did for last year’s iPhone 14 series. Last year’s iPhone 14 was also launched a week earlier than usual, on the first Wednesday of September.
Here are some of Apple’s previous announcements and release dates:
iPhone | Year | Announced | Released |
iPhone 14 series | 2022 | September 7 | September 16 |
iPhone 13 series | 2021 | September 14 | September 24 |
iPhone 12 series | 2020 | October 13 | October 23 |
iPhone 11 series | 2019 | September 10 | September 20 |
iPhone XR | 2018 | September 12 | October 26 |
iPhone XS, XS Max | 2018 | September 12 | September 21 |
iPhone X | 2017 | September 12 | November 3 |
Predicted iPhone 15 release date
There’s only been one iPhone launch since 2014 that was announced outside of September (thanks to COVID), so you’d think that it would be safe to consider September as Apple’s go-to launch month.
New iPhone 15 leaks could suggest an October release date, as rumours of production issues are circulating. It’s said that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are failing reliability tests due to their new design.
If this is true, we could see another staggered release, with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus releasing in September ahead of the Pro models. Alternatively, we could see Apple hold off releasing any new iPhone models entirely until October. Assuming that Apple fix any production issues that have arisen, we can expect the new iPhone to launch in September.
While we can only speculate on the potential iPhone 15 release date, we’ve narrowed it down to a few potential dates. Apple could make their announcement on the 5th September, the first Tuesday of the month. However, the 4th is Labor Day, so it seems unlikely that Apple will pick this date.
If Apple wants to stick to the first week of September but wants to avoid Labor Day issues, we could see the iPhone 15 announcement on Wednesday, 6th September. If this is the case, the iPhone 15 release date would be Friday, 15th September.
If Apple chooses to make their announcement on the second Tuesday of September, the event will be held on the 12th, with the phones going on sale on Friday, 22nd September.
